OverviewODP conducted research into Earth processes by recovering sediment and rock samples from below the seafloor and using the resulting holes to perform downhole measurements and experiments. This web site presents background information about the organization and activities of ODP for the benefit of researchers, students, science administrators, and the general public. It provides the interested user with a broad overview of a complex program that evolved over its 20-year existence, as well as context for the specialized formal published reports of the program. The site is not intended as a comprehensive historical archive. Although ODP was the successor to the Deep Sea Drilling Project (DSDP) and built upon experience gained from DSDP, limited resources have precluded any attempt to incorporate DSDP materials, other than by reference to the published reports of the DSDP.
